Couples everywhere tie the knot and merge their financial lives and make the most of the tax advantages that come with the designation of “married filing jointly.” You actually have the choice of filing separately or jointly. It is worth determining which way results in the lower tax liability.
Starting the journey of marriage on the right foot applies to the tax and financial considerations as well as all the other personal levels. So, whether it is you who are tying the knot, or someone you know, the following considerations can help to make the transition to married life much easier especially at tax time.

Winning at Vegas and casinos around the country, the racetrack, bingo or your friendly football or basketball bets are supposed to be reported to the IRS. Currently, if you play the slot machines and win a jackpot of $1200 or more, the machine will shut down until a representative arrives with the appropriate tax form.
It is not clear yet if the IRS is going to lower the slot machine and bingo winning threshold to $600 or not. That is a proposal that was heard on Wednesday, June 17th. According to an article in The Review Journal, “Geoff Freeman, president and chief executive of the American Gaming Association, told a panel of IRS and Treasury Department officials the proposal is ‘far more complicated, onerous and unproductive’ than the government may have understood.

Hopefully this proposed new legislation will be passed before next tax season. It could be good news for all taxpayers especially those who owe the IRS back taxes.
The bill will make it easier for taxpayers to enter into an installment agreement or have an offers-in-compromise agreed to without requiring chief counsel review for offers in compromise of over $50,000.
Proposed by Senators Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and John Thune, R-S.D. the legislation would “improve customer service at the Internal Revenue Service, create new taxpayer protections, and update and strengthen existing taxpayer protections.”
In light of the multitude of tax fraud scams perpetrated on Americans for the past few years, many of which led to the criminals being protected by the IRS instead of the taxpayer, it will be interesting to see how this plays out if passed.

With the IRS entangled in the most pervasive tax fraud in history, your tax problem may seem like small potatoes. If you think for a moment that their attention will be diverted away from the money you owe them, think again.
Even though a recent article published in The Hill calls for “all hands on deck” and quoted Orrin Hatch and Ron Wyden as saying, “Any solution must involve coordination between Congress, the IRS, state agencies, law enforcement, and the tax preparation industry.” (http://thehill.com/policy/finance/244092-congress-to-irs-all-hands-on-deck-on-tax-fraud)
One might be tempted into thinking that all efforts will be focused on trying to reach a solution and that your personal tax problems simply aren’t going away. Once again, be assured the IRS will not turn a blind eye.

The good news is they did it! The IRS has agreed to help the victims of identity theft instead of protecting the criminals. According to an article in Accounting Today, “The Internal Revenue Service has agreed to change its policy on identity theft and provide victims with copies of the fraudulent tax returns that have been filed under their names by scammers.” (www.accountingtoday.com/news/tax-practice/irs-changes-identity-theft-policy-74762-1)
Had it not been for a persuasive letter from Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H., who wrote to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen last month in response to the massive breach, the innocent taxpayers would still be prevented from getting any helpful information.

It isn’t often we hear about the IRS giving something away for free. But, considering the fact that 104,000 taxpayers had their identities stolen and were unable to file their tax returns because thieves were able to access their personal information through the IRS’s “Get Transcript” application, well it seems that’s the least the IRS could do.
Criminals first gain enough information from other sources before they try to access the IRS site. First they troll through social media sites gaining access to birth dates, street addresses and nicknames before attempting to get into the IRS site. Eventually they get enough information allowing them to clear a multi-step authentication process, which includes several personal verification questions that typically are know only by the taxpayers.

The Internal Revenue Service will try to get money from taxpayers any way it can. And that means targeting innocent American businesses as tax evaders and terrorists under the Bank Secrecy Act. Even though Congress pressured the IRS into changing its policies last year, the IRS has not yet begun efforts to cease and desist.
The IRS continues to turn the lives of business owners upside down and in many cases ruin their businesses through this program, also referred to as the Civil Asset Forfeitures Act. Yet, their activities are being observed by groups such as The Institute for Civil Justice, a law firm in Arlington, VA, that has represented several business owners and helped them get their cases overturned and the money the IRS took from them returned.
